How do I get the most accurate reading?

What is roll vs pitch?

Checking plumb on a vertical surface

Switch to Plumb and hold the phone flat against the face you are checking — a door jamb, a fence post, the leg of a bookcase. The vial turns vertical and the bubble rides up or down as the surface leans toward or away from you. This is the mode for anything that should be truly upright rather than truly flat, and it is where a bubble level earns its keep during assembly: a cabinet that is level across the top but out of plumb at the back will still rock.

What throws a reading off

Phone accelerometers resolve a few tenths of a degree once calibrated, which is close enough for almost every household job. Three things spoil a reading: holding the phone instead of resting it, a raised camera bump that props one corner up, and vibration from an appliance or passing traffic. Fix the first by putting the phone down, the second with a case that sits flush or by measuring face-down, and the third by waiting for the surface to be still.

The 180° calibration check

There is a simple way to prove the tool is honest, and it works on any level, digital or glass. Take a reading, rotate the phone 180° in place without moving the surface, and read again. A correctly zeroed level gives you the same figure with the opposite sign — +0.4° becomes −0.4°. If both readings show the same sign, the difference between them is sensor bias: tap Calibrate and repeat until they mirror.

Bubble level app vs. an online bubble level
